VERNON – - Teachers have agreed to take a furlough day, saving the school system about $150,000 and provided the board of education with about half of a $300,000 cut mandated by the Mayor.
After the town's $76 million budget was approved last month, the board of education was asked to cut $300,000 from the $45.8 million education spending plan by Mayor Jason McCoy. On Monday, the board and teachers agreed to a furlough day Jan. 15, 2010 at a savings of $150,000. The remaining cuts will be taken from reductions in insurance and supply accounts.
The 2009-10 school year will be reduced to 181 days, one above the state-mandated 180 days of school."
