New Playscape at the Lake Street School in Vernon Article | ReminderNews

Article ReminderNews: "After seven years of planning, fundraising and construction, the new playscape at the Lake Street School in Vernon finally reached completion and was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 24."

As the students, their teachers and staff looked on, Principal Bob Testa offered his greetings, introducing Marcotte , Mayor Jason McCoy, who read a proclamation of congratulations. The ribbon was then ceremoniously cut, and without further ado, the children got to enjoy the new playscape. In short order, the swings, the slides, the jungle gyms and the parallel bars were in full use.

Mayor Jason McCoy said the first two phases have been reserved, for a total of $76,000. For fiscal year 2010, phase three of $38,000 has been adopted, for a potential total of $114,000 for first three of the five phases of the project.

Part of the negotiations are for the town to use some of its own resources, such as the Geographic Information System (GIS), to defray some costs. Mc-Coy indicated the town may also seek the help of a different firm for the public polling, to save more money.

VERNON- Mayor Jason McCoy has announced that Vernon residents who have served in the Armed Forces and currently qualify for the Disabled Veteran status will no longer need to provide annual proof of disability to the Town Assessor’s Office for a municipal tax credit. Under the new legislation signed by Gov. Rell, Senate Bill 848 “An Act Concerning the Disabled Veterans’ ; Property tax Exemption,” eliminates the requirement of annual filing for the Disabled Veteran Property Tax Credit. The new law benefits disabled service members who will now need to file appropriate paperwork once, eliminating the need for annual filing and making it easier to obtain and submit proof of disability. The law takes effect immediately .

VERNON – - Teachers have agreed to take a furlough day, saving the school system about $150,000 and provided the board of education with about half of a $300,000 cut mandated by the Mayor.

After the town's $76 million budget was approved last month, the board of education was asked to cut $300,000 from the $45.8 million education spending plan by Mayor Jason McCoy. On Monday, the board and teachers agreed to a furlough day Jan. 15, 2010 at a savings of $150,000. The remaining cuts will be taken from reductions in insurance and supply accounts.

The 2009-10 school year will be reduced to 181 days, one above the state-mandated 180 days of school."
